Pets in Spain

If you plan to bring your pet with you to Spain we recommend that you use PETS (Pet Travel Scheme). Pets must be micro chipped, vaccinated against rabies and undergo a blood test. They are then issued with a health certificate (passport). Do be aware that the issue of a health certificate can take six months.

The scheme is only available in countries where rabies is under control. If you are planning to import pets from other countries or choose to import without using the scheme ask your vet or Spanish consulate for information about current quarantine laws. In England contact the Department for Environment, Food and Rural affairs or your local Animal Health Office.

Dog owners in Spain are required to register their pets. This can be done by the local vet. It is also advisable to ask the vet for recommended vaccinations. There are health risks in Spain to which your pet may be susceptible. If your dog is classed as a dangerous dog you will need to take various extra measures in order to obtain a special licence. Once again you should consult your vet.
