Performing Arts in Spain

Few visitors to Andalucia will be unaware of the region's traditional performance art and many will endeavour to enjoy the stomping, twirling excitement created by a good example of flamenco.

Flamenco is a combination of dance, music, singing and dramatic interpretation. There are those who say that only gypsies give a true performance, as flamenco talent is passed in the blood. Most people agree that to truly feel the rhythms of flamenco a performer must spend many years in Andalucia. Most towns have a dance school for those who desire to learn the rudiments of Flamenco and indeed other forms of dance.

True enthusiasts have no time for the commercial Flamenco performances staged in hotels but instead recommend the festivals and competitions that take place in summer months. These are advertised in the local press a few weeks before they start.

Like in any other urban area performing arts are widely available and play an important part in the social calendar of many people. In addition to professional performances there are many amateur groups who perform in English along the coast and who welcome new members.

For children regular courses are run in dance, drama and singing at Stagecoach Schools and many schools offer after-school activities in these disciplines.
