Bullfighting in Spain

The practice of bullfighting is a contentious issue for many people, visitors and locals alike. The local press often print letters from readers both deploring and supporting this blood-sport that has prevailed in Spain since well before Roman times. Arguments for and against aside, the fact remains that bullfighting plays an important role in the celebrations that are at the heart of Spanish culture.

Understanding a little of its history may not convert its critics, but some insight might be found as to why bullfighting is becoming increasingly popular amongst people in Spain today.

Bulls are bred especially to end their lives in the bullring. Before their fight they will have never faced a man on foot, should this experience lead them to charge the man rather than the cape. Over 4 years old and weighing between 500 and 800 kilos the bull should personify death itself, in order for the matador to leave the fight having escaped with his life.

The fight is played out in a strictly followed sequence and it is this control and tradition that supporters enjoy watching. The bull is lead by a skilled matador through stages that demonstrate his might and allow him a respectable death when, finally, he is weakened by the relentless stamina of man. The sport is deemed to be so popular because it illustrates that with skill and persistence man can overcome a much superior foe.

The bullfighting season in Spain is between April and October with main fights occurring during the local annual fairs. Events are publicised in advance on posters and in local papers.
