Beaches in Spain

Andalucia is famous for its 800 km of sandy beaches and visiting them is the most popular recreational activity for its tourists and residents alike.

Wide, open, white, sandy, dune backed beaches are typical of the Costa de la Luz in Cadiz Province, the most popular being the beach at Tarifa. Strong winds make it a mecca for surfers and many travel from afar to ride its white-crested waves. Sun seekers should take a windbreak to avoid being stung by wind-whipped sand.

The Costa del Sol provides both bustle and tranquillity. There are beaches to suit all tastes whether you require entertainment for the kids or an all over tan with no strap marks. Some beach clubs provide access to a swimming pool and most have a shower. On many beaches exclusive restaurants overlook the sea. On other stretches of sand, a sea breeze carries the aroma of barbequed sardines cooked in old fishing boats.

The long Andalucian summer means there will be plenty of time to explore local beaches and find the one which will become your family's favourite.

If you are happier under the waves, the hidden coves of the Costa Tropical in Granada province will provide you with diving and snorkelling opportunities. If it's peace and solitude you desire, the Costa de Almeria has deserted beaches where the only company you will find is that of the sea gulls.

In the winter months, even the busiest beaches are quiet and although the sea may be a tad chilly for most, it is often warm enough for a lazy snooze in the sun.
